One of my recent no-brainer streaming shows has been Tracker. It’s about this guy who drives around in a big truck with an air stream camper and collects rewards by finding missing people.
More and more I am struck by just how there’s a very pointed capitalist message. He’s a loner. He’s independent. And he does this job FOR THE MONEY. Most of the relationships he has with his “team”/family talk about getting paid, making money, this will cost you. Everything is intensely transactional.
You get the vibe that he’s this “do-gooder” but he always takes his money. He will never do it out of the good of his heart. He’s always willing to “take the job” and “earn his pay”. I don’t know exactly why it rubs me so wrong, but I’m paying attention.
The recent election has sent me the overwhelming message that things need to change. It has sent me back to my spiritual practices and the good influences I’ve been fortunate? blessed? lucky? I am grateful to have found.
I believe the only way forward is to “be the change I want to see in the world”. The full/actual quote by Mahatma Gandhi:
We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.
What changes do you want to see?
